GST Composition Scheme: A Boon for Small Businesses
9 Oct 2026

The due date for filing the Income Tax Audit Report for Assessment Year (AY) 2026–27 has been extended by the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT). As per Circular No. 07/2026 dated 28 September 2026, the specified date for furnishing the tax audit report has been extended from 30 September 2026 to 21 October 2026 for taxpayers covered under the relevant audit category. The corresponding income tax return filing due date has been extended from 31 October 2026 to 21 November 2026.

What Does the Tax Audit Due Date Extension Mean?

From a Chartered Accountant’s perspective, the extension provides additional time for completing the tax audit, verification of books of accounts, reconciliation of financial data, and preparation of the prescribed audit report. However, taxpayers should not consider the extension as a reason to postpone compliance.

A tax audit extends beyond merely verifying turnover. A Chartered Accountant conducts a comprehensive review of the books of accounts, financial records, supporting documents, accounting practices, statutory compliances, applicable deductions, disallowances, and other reporting requirements to ensure accurate and compliant tax reporting.

Key Technical Areas Reviewed During a Tax Audit

During an Income Tax Audit, professionals generally examine areas such as:

  • Books of accounts and financial statements
  • Turnover and gross receipts reconciliation
  • TDS/TCS compliance
  • GST turnover reconciliation
  • Cash transactions and cash-payment limits
  • Depreciation and fixed asset records
  • Expenses liable for disallowance
  • Related-party transactions
  • Loans, deposits and specified financial transactions
  • Outstanding statutory liabilities
  • Section-wise deductions and disallowances
  • Presumptive taxation applicability
  • Tax audit clauses and reporting requirements

For FY 2025–26 relevant to AY 2026–27, the prescribed tax audit reporting continues under the Income Tax Act, 1961, using Form 3CA or Form 3CB, along with Form 3CD, as applicable.

Why Professional Tax Audit Support Matters

A tax audit report is a compliance document that requires careful professional evaluation. Errors in turnover reconciliation, TDS reporting, GST figures, depreciation, expense classification, or statutory dues can create unnecessary tax exposure and compliance issues.

What Should Taxpayers Do Now?

The extension should be viewed as an opportunity to complete the audit accurately rather than simply as additional filing time. Businesses should keep their books updated, reconcile GST and TDS records, organize supporting documents, and coordinate with their Chartered Accountant at the earliest.
